Chili Ristras and Coxsackievirus

Yesterday we drove up to Ruiodoso, NM for our yearly search for the perfect ristra to hang on our front patio. Red chilis are in such abundance in NM that they are actually used for decorative purposes... strung together and hung outside. I much prefer my red chili this way.... too hot when used with cooking. and no, we weren't with the 15,000 other people herding to see Sarah Palin in Roswell - although I have a much greater respect for hockey moms. Too bad there's no hockey in the SW) Green chili isn't too bad (not as hot as Red), and it's full of vitamin C. I'm just never sure what to put it in. All the grocery stores have buckets of green chilis with roasters outside ready to roast them for you. A very notable scent (the roasting of chilis), which everyone here equates with 'fall'. :) Last week Joshua got his second day-care illness (woohoo!!!) Only working 2 days a week, and his immune system is getting my money's worth. Came home with a fever on Wednesdsay and refusing to eat- evidently had spots on his throat and his hands.... viral Hand, Foot, Mouth disease. I think he made up for all the ounces of milk he passed up for 3 days - woke up starving twice during the night all weekend and is feeling much better. And we found out he LOVES avacado!!! mix in some bananas... mmmmm... Southwest bananas? lol

Drool, Toe Jam, and Spit Up

These are a few of my favorite things... :) So, so much for posting - like 10 months ago. So, I was 4 mo. pregnant at our last post... and Joshua's now 4 months old- to the day!! After going to my 10 year college reunion last weekend - realized how behind I was on keeping in touch, blogging - and Facebook. Still figuring that one out. But have found tons of friends that disappeared during the late 90's diaspora. :) Or maybe I'm just a hermit. That lives in the desert. So, this week I attempted his first feed - he's been waking up around 4 am (had been sleeping 10+ hours at night WOOHOO) starving hungry. So maybe this will help? we'll see... more like a messy culinary experiment. Doesn't seem to like it. He's also started drooling... no signs of any teeth yet, but I found this website to make a drool bib and found some gore-tex fabric on ebay for almost free.... my mom created some stylish bibs for Joshua- that WORK wonderfully!! No more soaked chest. I'll have to take a picture of him in them. super cute. And on drool... I must admit that the literature that states that this time in Joshua's life is quite frequently the most pleasant for the family dog- SO true. licked up his face, will be glad to clean the floors in the future... quite helpful. And of course loves to give kisses. Good Moose. So, about Toe Jam. How do babies get toe jam? That's my question for the day. I'm on call this weekend for 48 hrs straight, so I think I'm going to head to bed early tonight.

Seasons Greetings

This was too funny to pass up - a bogus Christmas card sent to voters in South Carolina with a quote from 1 Nephi (??)...note the bold text on the front of the card. The inside text was even better:
"We have now clearly shown that God the father had a plurality of wives, one or more being eternity by whom he begat our spirits as well as the spirit of Jesus, his first born, and another being upon the earth by whom he begat the tabernacle of Jesus, as his only begotten in this world"
That should sit well with the conservative voters in SC!!

Christmas Season

Twas the day after Christmas and all through the house, not a creature was working not even a mouse...

Wow...Christmas is over and another year wanes. The day after Christmas is traditionally one of my least favorite days of the year...bleh. We went to one of the Portland (Oregon) malls this afternoon - talk about crowded! People everywhere! I brought a book to read (while everyone else spent money) and I could barely find a place to sit...bleh!

We spent yesterday at James and Teresa's house (Callie's brother/sister-in-law) with the majority of the family and had a great afternoon opening gifts and talking by the fire. Unfortunately, I have a scratchy throat, so I did more listening than talking :( I told Callie that was my gift to her for the holidays - for the next few days I promised to listen more than I talked...hehe. C & I were given a new video recorder (Panasonic HD-DVD) for Christmas which I've been fiddling with some today...maybe I'll have some video to post in the next few months! C gave me permission to take it to Mexico in a few weeks for our deer hunt...woo-hoo!

Depending on the weather in the mountains, we may head to Sisters, OR for a few days with Callie's dad's side of the family - returning home to NM on the 31st...the day of the Insight bowl! Go Pokes!

Book Club

Recently, we purchased a Playstation 3 with MotorStorm and Call of Duty 4. In the last two weeks, we've barely turned it on! The Dodson household more closely resembles a library these days; the TV remotes are tucked away and the hardcovers / iPods are on display.

Callie: Dare to Discipline; James Dobson
Steve: Mere Christianity; C.S. Lewis, Velvet Elvis; Rob Bell
Both: Modern Reformation magazine, White Horse Inn broadcasts

Modern Reformation magazine and (especially) the White Horse Inn have both been an amazing blessing to us; a Christ-centered oasis in the middle of a "contemporary evangelical" desert. In the near future, I hope to post a bit more on the two books I'm wading through; one a classic, the other disturbing (at best).

Christmas Letter 2007

A voice cries: "In the wilderness prepare the way of the LORD;
make straight in the desert a highway for our God.
Every valley shall be lifted up,
and every mountain and hill be made low;
the uneven ground shall become level,
and the rough places a plain.
And the glory of the LORD shall be revealed,
and all flesh shall see it together,
for the mouth of the LORD has spoken."
Isaiah 40:3-5

What better time to begin blogging again than with our Christmas Letter?

We decided this year to not only put our Christmas letter online (for more flexibility - better color pictures, etc...) but to begin blogging again. Once upon a time we were avid bloggers (Steve more than Callie) - but once Callie moved to NM we fell out of the habit. 2007 may not have been as eventful as 2006, but nonetheless full of change once again.

Our highlights included visits by both Callie's mom and brother. We subjected the Oregonians to beautiful N.M. scenery at Three Rivers Petroglyph state park, Lincoln, and White Sands; we loved the scenery and showing them some of the beauty of the state. We also spent a relaxing weekend over Cinco de Mayo in the Santa Fe area with friends Todd and Brandy Gofourth. In July we drove up to sorthern Colorado (Taylor River) with Steve’s family for a long weekend getaway/fishing trip. Callie turned out to be quite the fisherwoman and was the only one who wanted to "keep" the fish she caught - a rainbow trout and a brown trout still sit in our freezer awaiting the perfect moment to grill them. Mmmm. No one seemed to want to taste them on the trip.

Shortly after our 1 year anniversary we traveled to Costa Rica on a dive trip with the local scuba club. The diving was poor due to a plankton bloom that obscured visibility, but we still saw some HUGE schools of fish (angel / butterfly), dolphins/turtles, a large manta ray, a nurse shark, octopus, lobster, and tons of eels... and Callie got some more experience and felt a lot more comfortable down under. We also had a blast on several tropical excursions -- zip lining over the jungle canopy, witnessing volcanic activity (Arenal Volcano), and viewing exotic jungle critters (howler monkeys). Such an awesome display of God’s handiwork!

In August we flew to Oregon for a relaxing week of vacation and had fun at the coast ATV-ing and camping at the Oregon Dunes with Callie’s family. We can’t wait to go back!!

In September, Steve retired from Thermo Fisher Scientific to begin a new career with Dodson Wholesale Lumber.Overnight his focus shifted from database tuning to processing payroll - quite the change! Despite the learning curve, he has thoroughly enjoyed working with his father and brother in the family business.

Callie is still working for Rio Pecos full time as a midwife and loves the relationships she’s building and the impact she makes on her clients (albeit sometimes small). She loves delivering babies, and is a part of an awesome Christian group. This summer a 2nd hospital opened its doors and Rio Pecos is now servicing over 80% of their patients there- Callie’s now able to do waterbirths at the new hospital!!PADI certified... haha.

Moose continues to grow and is well over 100 pounds. We just finished "raising the roof" on his dog house to account for his nearly three foot shoulder height (44"+ floor to head!).He has re-landscaped the back yardmultiple times and is currently midway through an ambitious dig to China. No word on the completion date, but we’ll keep everyone posted.

Mowgli is still the same, but not as exciting to write about- he has caught a mouse in the back yard... (yeah!!) and spends his time sleeping and evading our still playful dane.

Our final - and easily best - news is that we're expecting!! Come June 2008 we will be welcoming our firstborn. By the end of the year Callie will be four months pregnant. Thus far, the pregnancy has been relatively easy for Callie - despite her knowing WAY too much. Junior is easily one of the better photographed peanuts in Roswell! We are as excited as we are nervous...ready or not!

We hope to post here often, and welcome your comments and participation. This, along with our Kodak Gallery will be our primary way of journaling, posting, and keeping everyone up to date, especially once little peanut makes a more public appearance. FYI: The password to our Kodak Gallery is our last name.

With love at Christmas,

We're Preggers!

What better time to begin blogging again than with the expectation of a new life? We're due June 21, 2008 - only a mere 8 weeks at this point. It will be a joy to once again share our life happenings and thoughts!!
